Book Illustration for People are Like Cupcakes
PROJECT TYPE:
Concept, Illustration
PROJECT DURATION:
July 2015 - August 2015
OVERVIEW
About the Project
The project was a children’s book that told a story about inclusivity and integration of different cultures, and included valuable lessons for children growing up in a diverse environment.
MY ROLE
Making the Right Design Choices for a Young Audience
I created the visual concept for the story, chalked out the backgrounds and scenes through the text cues in the story, designed the different characters, and created colourful, bright and engaging illustrations that would appeal to children aged between 3-8 years.
The story was provided by the author, and my tasks involved finalising an illustration style, deciding the fonts and colours, sketching out different characters, and illustrating backgrounds and scenes.
The goal was to keep the illustrations bright, eye-catching and simple so they are suited for young readers. The artwork needed to be playful yet sensitive for the important lessons contained within the text.
The entire book was illustrated using Adobe Illustrator.
PROCESS
Finalising the Illustration Style
I started by creating the storyboard, and sketching the various scenarios depicted in the story. I chose a font that was easy to read and colours that looked fun and bright to grab the attention of young readers. Different versions of the characters were created initially to finalise an illustration style.
